Newport Pagnell has an old core with genuinely complicated roofs — multiple pitches, valleys, dormers, additions built across several centuries and joined imperfectly — set in a river valley with a great deal of mature tree cover.

Complicated roofs are harder to proof than complicated walls. Every junction between two roof planes, and every point where an addition meets an original, is a potential opening, and there are a lot of them.

On a simple pitched roof there are perhaps half a dozen places worth checking. On a building that has grown over two hundred years there can be thirty, and they are not all visible from the ground.

Valleys, dormer cheeks, the point where a lower roof abuts a wall, lead flashings that have lifted, the gap behind a parapet, a chimney stack junction: each one is a place where two materials meet and where the meeting has been remade at least once.

So the survey takes longer here, and it is the part that decides whether the job holds. Proofing four openings on a roof that has six is not a finished job, and it is the commonest way a squirrel problem in an old building becomes an annual event.
