Leighton Buzzard and Linslade sit on the Greensand Ridge, and the ridge carries some of the best-established woodland in Bedfordshire — mature mixed broadleaf running in a more or less continuous band.

Squirrel calls are not evenly spread through the year. Two periods produce most of them.

Autumn, when squirrels are ranging more widely to cache food and are actively assessing places to spend the winter. A loft is warm, dry and undisturbed, which makes it an obvious candidate.

Late winter into early spring, when the first breeding season starts and a female is looking for somewhere secure to build a drey. This is the one that produces the "it was quiet and now it is very loud" calls, because a litter is considerably noisier than an individual.

The practical point: proofing done in late summer catches the autumn push, which is the cheapest moment in the cycle to deal with it.
