What goes wrong
A Nest Defends Itself, All at Once
Most pest control failures are disappointing. This one is different, because the failure mode is several hundred wasps simultaneously deciding you are the problem.
A mature nest in August holds thousands of individuals. Wasps defend it collectively and they release an alarm pheromone when the nest is disturbed, which recruits more of them within seconds. That is why the accounts all sound the same: it was fine, and then it very suddenly was not.
The specific ways it goes wrong are predictable. A shop aerosol has a range of a couple of metres and a nest in a loft or a cavity is further in than that, so the product reaches the entrance and not the nest. Treating in daylight catches the foragers out and leaves the nest intact. And treating from a ladder removes the one thing you need, which is the ability to walk away quickly.
The serious cases
Four Situations Where You Should Not Try
- Anyone in the household is allergic. This is not a judgement call. Multiple stings are a real risk with a disturbed nest.
- The nest is in a loft, a cavity or under the floor. You cannot see it, you cannot reach it, and you are in an enclosed space with one way out.
- It needs a ladder. More people are hurt falling than stung. A ladder and a cloud of wasps is a genuinely bad combination.
- It is underground, or in a bank or compost heap. Common in gardens here, easy to step on without seeing, and very defensive.
If it is in a shed or a bin store you use daily, or beside a door, a path or where children play, treat that as urgent rather than something for the weekend.
When it is fine
Two Things You Can Do Yourself
Not everything needs a technician, and it is worth saying so.
A small nest found early, in spring, is a golf ball with one queen in it and no workers yet. If it is somewhere you can reach easily and safely from the ground, it can be knocked down with no drama. The whole risk profile of a wasp nest comes from the workers, and in April there are none.
An old nest from last year is not reoccupied. Wasps do not reuse a nest. Once the winter has been through it, an abandoned nest in a loft is a papery shell and can simply be removed and binned.
What you should not do is assume a nest is small because the entrance is. Most of a cavity nest is behind the wall.
The alternative
Fixed £90, and Usually the Same Day
Wasp nest treatment is a fixed £90 with no call-out fee, and it is the one service here with a published price, because it is the one job that is genuinely the same every time.
It is treated where it is, which means a loft, a cavity or a ground nest is dealt with properly rather than at arm's length. The treatment is guaranteed: if wasps return to the same nest location we come back and re-treat at no extra cost. Same-day appointments are available, and evenings and weekends, which matters in August when everyone rings at once.
Afterwards, keep people and pets away from the nest area and the flight path for the rest of the day. Activity usually drops within hours. The nest itself does not normally need removing — once it is dealt with it is not reused.
Short answers
Questions, Briefly
How much is wasp nest removal?
A fixed £90 with no call-out fee. Same-day appointments are available, including evenings and weekends.
Is the treatment guaranteed?
Yes. If wasps return to the same nest location we will come back and re-treat at no extra cost.
Can I deal with a small nest myself?
A spring nest the size of a golf ball, reachable safely from the ground, has one queen and no workers, and can be knocked down. Once there are workers, that changes completely.
Do you remove the nest afterwards?
Usually it is treated and left. Wasps do not reuse a nest, so an empty one is harmless. It can be removed if the location makes that sensible.
The nest is underground in the lawn. Is that different?
Different location, same treatment, and a good reason not to attempt it yourself - ground nests are easy to step on and very defensive.
How soon does it work?
Activity usually drops sharply within hours. Keep away from the area and the flight path for the rest of the day.
