Pest Control

Twelve services across fifteen towns. Pick the town and you get the local picture; pick the pest and you get the detail.

Start here

Two Ways Into This

Most people arrive knowing one of two things: what the pest is, or where they are. This section is organised both ways.

If you know what it is, go to the service. Each of the twelve has its own section with the detail — how the treatment works, what it costs where there is a price, what the guarantee covers, and the things that commonly go wrong.

If you would rather start local, go to your town. Each of the fifteen town pages says what pest work in that particular place actually involves, which is genuinely not the same everywhere: sandy ground at Leighton Buzzard puts wasp nests underground, beech woodland at Tring drives a squirrel population that rises and falls with the mast, and a flat in Watford has a roof that belongs to somebody else.

And if you are not sure what you have, ring and describe it. That conversation is free and it quite often ends with us telling you it is bees and you want a beekeeper.

The honest bits

Four Things Worth Saying Up Front

Not everything needs treating. Bumblebees and solitary bees are best left alone and a honeybee swarm wants a beekeeper rather than us. A European hornet nest somewhere out of the way will die off in autumn. Saying so costs us bookings and it is still the right answer.

Proofing is the part that lasts. A treatment deals with what is there now; closing the way in is what stops it happening again. Almost every section on this site makes the same point because it is true of almost every pest.

Some of it is not our trade. Chewed cable is an electrician. A cracked drain is a drainage contractor. A blocked gas flue is a Gas Safe engineer. We will tell you which, and we would rather say it than take the money.

Guarantees have terms. Many treatments here carry one and the terms are explained before the work, not afterwards. A guarantee with a stated scope is worth considerably more than one without.

Cost

What Has a Price and What Does Not

One service on this site has a published figure: wasp nest treatment at £90, fixed, with no call-out fee. It is the only one that is genuinely the same job every time — one nest, one visit, done.

Everything else depends on the building and the extent, so it is quoted rather than listed. Quotes are free, there is no call-out fee for coming to look, and the price is agreed with you before any work starts. If a figure ever changes on the day, something has gone wrong.

Two things that genuinely affect what you pay, and are worth knowing before you ring. Timing: most problems are cheaper and safer to deal with early, and a wasp nest in June is a fraction of the risk of the same nest in September even though the price is identical. And access: work well beyond ladder height, or needing a tower, is a different piece of work and is agreed beforehand rather than added afterwards.

Commercial

Food Premises, Blocks and Managed Property

Commercial work is arranged differently from domestic work, and the difference is mostly about timing and records.

Attendance can be early, late or on a closed day so the premises keep trading. And the useful output is not only the treatment: what was found, where, what was applied, what was recommended and what is still outstanding. For food premises that record is what turns a finding into a closed item, and it matters as much as the work.

For blocks and managed property the recurring problem is different again — the part of the building with the problem is communal, and the resident who is suffering cannot authorise anything. A written finding is what moves that, because an agent can act on a maintenance item in a way they cannot act on a complaint.

Short answers

Drain Blocker Questions

What pests do you deal with?

Rats, mice, wasps and hornets, bed bugs, fleas, cockroaches, ants, carpet moths, squirrels, and drain rat proofing. If you are not sure what you have, ring and describe it.

How quickly can you come?

Same-day or next-day across the area, and often within hours for something urgent. Evening and weekend appointments are available.

What does it cost?

Wasp nest treatment is a fixed £90 with no call-out fee. Everything else depends on the building and the extent, so it is quoted free and agreed before any work starts.

Is the treatment safe with children and pets?

The products are safe when applied correctly, and the technician will tell you what precautions apply during and after. Say when you book if there are children, pets, or anyone with a health condition in the property.

Is it guaranteed?

Many treatments carry a guarantee and the terms are explained before the work rather than afterwards. Ask what the wording covers when you book.

Do you work with businesses?

Yes - shops, restaurants, takeaways, pubs, warehouses, offices and care homes, with out-of-hours attendance and a written record of what was found and done.

Will it come back?

Not if the way in is closed. That is why proofing matters more than the treatment on most jobs, and why every section here spends time on it.

I am not sure whether it is a pest problem at all.

Ring and describe it. Quite often the answer is that it is bees, or it will pass on its own, and we would rather tell you that than turn up.

Do you treat bees?

No. Honeybee swarms want a local beekeeper, who will usually collect one free, and bumblebees and solitary bees are best left alone.

I rent. Who is responsible?

Broadly, structural defects that let pests in are the landlord’s, and waste and cleanliness are the tenant’s. There is a fuller account in the landlord and tenant article.

One Last Thing
