Milton Keynes was designed with tree cover as a founding principle, and fifty years on that planting is mature. Linear parks, grid-road belts and redway corridors mean a very large proportion of the housing backs directly onto established trees.

For squirrels that is close to ideal. Continuous canopy gives them a route across the city without touching the ground, and it delivers them to the back of an estate rather than to its edge. The result is that almost anywhere in MK can be within jumping distance of a roof.

The city's housing is mostly post-1970, which changes where they get in. There is less rotten timber than in an older town and rather more plastic.

The recurring openings here are the plastic soffit and fascia systems, where a squirrel will work at a joint or a corner until it opens; plastic roof vents and tile vents, which are gnawed through readily; the junction where a garage, porch or conservatory roof meets the main wall, which is the commonest single point on a modern estate house; and dry-verge systems where a cap has come loose.

The advantage of a modern roofline is that once you know where it failed, it is straightforward to close properly. The disadvantage is that there is a great deal of plastic and they know it.
