Thirty pictures of what each problem actually looks like, what it leaves behind, and what dealing with it involves.

What This Page Is

This page is here to help you work out what you have got. Most of the calls we take start with somebody describing something they have seen and not being sure what it was, and a picture settles that faster than a paragraph.

So it is arranged by what you would actually be looking at: the insect or animal itself, then the evidence it leaves — which is usually what you find first — then the marks and behaviour that make people pick up the phone, and then what the work involves.

These are illustrations, not a portfolio. They show what these problems look like in general, not photographs of individual jobs we have done. We would rather say that plainly than dress stock pictures up as a customer's loft.

Identification is most of the job, and most people get one thing wrong

What You Are Actually Looking At

An adult bed bug photographed close up, flat, oval and reddish-brown, with short antennae and a banded abdomen
Adult bed bug: flat, oval, about the size of an apple pipBedbug Control ›
A flea photographed through a microscope, amber and translucent, flattened side to side with backward-pointing bristles and heavy hind legs
Flattened side to side, built to move through hairFlea Control ›
A large reddish-brown cockroach lying on its back on a speckled stone surface, legs drawn up, long antennae trailing
A large cockroach after treatment. The German cockroach, the one that matters most in kitchens, is a good deal smallerCockroach Control ›
Several house mice together in nesting material, with large thin ears and pointed snouts
Large thin ears and a pointed snout: a house mouse, not a young ratMice Control ›
A line of ants running along the edge of a speckled kitchen worktop to a scatter of bread crumbs, with storage jars behind
A trail is a supply line, not a colonyAnt Control ›

Evidence accumulates while you are asleep or out. This is what it looks like

Where They Live, and What They Leave Behind

A cluster of bed bugs and dark spotting along the piped seam of a mattress
The seam of the mattress is the first place to lookBedbug Control ›
A hand holding a removed electrical faceplate away from a wall, both the back of the plate and the opening behind it heavily marked with dark bed bug spotting, with wiring visible in the back box
Behind a light switch. This is a real find, and it is why a survey means taking things off wallsBedbug Control ›
Dark ink-like spotting across a pale fabric surface, in scattered clusters
Spotting is digested blood, and it does not wipe off cleanlyBedbug Control ›
Small dark droppings along the base of a skirting board beside a gnawed opening
Droppings map the run, not the nestMice Control ›
Dark tapered droppings grouped along the top of a timber joist in a loft
Grouped and 15 to 20mm: rat, not mouseRat Control ›
Disturbed loft insulation with runs pressed through it and dark droppings scattered along a joist
A loft tells you how long it has been going onRat Control ›
A gnawed hole through white painted skirting board at floor level, with debris on the boards below
Gnawed, not squeezed: the edges are the giveawayRat Control ›
A mound of fine excavated soil in the bed at the edge of a paving slab, with an entrance hole at its centre and small dark ants moving over it, foliage behind
Excavated soil at a paving edge: this is the actual problemAnt Control ›
A line of ants crossing a pale tiled floor and converging on the bottom corner of a white painted door frame, clustering at the joint where they go in
Follow the line back and it goes out, not further inAnt Control ›
A wasp nest built against timber boarding, a rounded grey paper envelope with swirled bands and a single dark entrance hole at its centre, with black and yellow wasps around the opening
The enclosed grey envelope and one entrance: a common wasp nestWasp Control ›
A squirrel crouched on the edge of a white gutter below diagonal timber cladding, holding food to its mouth
The gutter line is the route onto the roofSquirrel Control ›
Dark specks and debris caught along the seam of a mattress, photographed close up
Flea dirt in a seam: crush it on damp tissue and it runs redFlea Control ›
A brown rat at the base of a brick wall beside an open airbrick
The gap was there first; the rat only found itRat Control ›

Usually a mark on the skin or an animal behaving oddly

What Makes People Ring

Raised red welts in small clusters and a short line across a person’s lower back, with a yellow top lifted clear
Clustered welts. Bites are a prompt to look, never a diagnosis on their ownBedbug Control ›

The pet usually notices before anyone else doesFlea Control ›

Survey, treat, then close the way in. The last part is the one that lasts

What the Work Looks Like

A technician in uniform shining a torch along pipework at the base of a wall
Most of a survey happens at floor level
A technician in uniform at a house doorstep with a works van parked on the drive behind
Same-day and emergency appointments
An opened tamper-resistant bait box on a hard surface, showing the bait secured on a rod inside

Service entries are where most of them get inMice Control ›
