Aylesbury is mostly newer than the towns to the south, with large post-war and modern estates and, on the newest of them, planting that has not yet matured. Less canopy means fewer squirrels, and parts of Aylesbury genuinely do see less of this than Tring or Amersham do.

Where it does happen here, it is concentrated: the older streets near the centre with established gardens, and the estates that back onto a belt of retained mature trees rather than onto open ground.

On a new estate, squirrel calls cluster with striking precision along whatever tree cover was there before the houses. A retained hedgerow, an old field boundary, a green corridor or a line of mature oaks kept as a landscaping feature will produce almost all of the work, and the houses backing onto it will have it while houses two streets away have none.

If you are on one of those boundaries, the proofing is worth doing properly rather than reactively, because the route is permanent — those trees are not going anywhere and neither is the population using them.

If you are not on one, and you have squirrels, it is worth asking how they are getting across. Usually there is a route somebody has not noticed.
