That phrasing appears on every service page on this site, and it is worded that way on purpose: the safety is not a property of the product on its own, it is a property of the product plus where it is put plus what you do for the next few hours.
Anyone who tells you a treatment is simply safe, with no conditions and no precautions, is not describing professional pest control. The precautions are short, they are specific, and they are the reason it works out fine.

Different Jobs, Different Precautions
Rodent bait is the one people worry about most, and reasonably. Professional work puts bait in tamper-resistant boxes, in places a child or a dog cannot reach — under floors, in ducts, behind appliances, in locked stations outdoors. The risk that matters in practice is not the box, it is a poisoned rodent being found and eaten by a cat or a dog, which is why a technician will want to know what animals you have before deciding the approach.
Insect sprays for fleas, bed bugs and carpet moths go onto surfaces and need to dry. The standard precaution is keeping people and animals off the treated area until it has, which is typically a couple of hours, and ventilating the room. Fish tanks get covered and their pumps turned off, because that is the one that catches people out.
Ant bait is a gel or a granule and works precisely because ants carry it home, so it is placed where ants go and fingers do not.
Wasp nest treatment needs everyone, including pets, kept away from the nest area and the flight path for the rest of the day. The risk there is stings, not the product.
Heat treatment for bed bugs involves no insecticide at all, which is part of why it gets used in homes with small children.

Tell the Technician Before the Visit, Not During
Say what is in the house when you book, not when someone is standing in the hall. It changes the plan, and changing the plan on the doorstep costs you the visit.
- A baby or a toddler, and which rooms they use.
- Cats and dogs, and whether they can be out or shut away for a few hours.
- Fish, reptiles, birds, or anything in a vivarium — these matter more than people expect.
- Anyone in the household who is pregnant, or who has asthma or a respiratory condition.
- Whether food preparation surfaces are involved.
None of that makes a treatment impossible. It changes which treatment, and where.
The other side
The Comparison Is Not Against Nothing
It is worth saying plainly: the alternative to a professional treatment is usually not an untreated house. It is a shop-bought product applied by someone with no training, in the open, in whatever quantity seemed right, often repeatedly because it did not work the first time.
That is the genuinely higher-risk option, and it is the one a lot of households pick before they ring anyone.

Typically a couple of hours for a surface spray, until it has dried - but the technician will give you the figure for your treatment, because it varies with the product and the room.
Is rodent bait safe with a dog in the house?
It is placed in tamper-resistant boxes out of reach. The risk worth discussing is a dog finding a dead rodent afterwards, so tell us what animals you have before the visit and the approach is adjusted.
What about fish tanks?
Cover the tank and switch the pump off before an insecticide treatment in that room. This is the one people forget most often.
Is there a treatment with no insecticide at all?
Heat treatment for bed bugs uses no insecticide. For other pests, proofing and trapping reduce or remove the need for it depending on the job.
