Why it is different

The Question Is What You Did About It

A wasp in a domestic kitchen is an annoyance. A wasp in a commercial one is a pest control issue under food hygiene law, and the question an environmental health officer asks is not whether you have ever had wasps — a town-centre kitchen with a yard and a bin store in August will — but whether you knew, what you did, and whether you can show it.

Which means the useful output of a visit is not only the treatment. It is the record: what was found, where, what was applied, what was recommended, and when. That is the thing that turns a finding into a non-issue.

Where they come from

Usually the Yard, Not the Kitchen

Nests in the kitchen itself are rare. The recurring sites are the ones round the back:

• The bin store — a sheltered cavity to nest in and a permanent sugar supply beside it.
• The roof void, entering at a soffit, a vent or the gap behind signage or cladding.
• Behind fascia panels and signage on the frontage.
• Cellar hatches, flat roofs, canopies and cable trays — anywhere undisturbed since spring.
• Undisturbed stock in a yard: stacked pallets, an unused skip, crates.

Doors are the other half of it. A propped kitchen door in August is an open invitation, and a fly screen that does not close is worse than no screen at all because everyone assumes it is working.

The beer garden problem

Which Is Really a Bin Problem

Wasps in a beer garden in late summer are frequently nothing to do with a nest on the premises. Foragers range hundreds of metres, and a garden with glasses, spilled drink, food waste and open bins is the best thing on offer for some distance.

Treating a nest you do not have will not fix that. What does help is unglamorous: clear glasses and plates promptly; keep bin lids shut and bins away from seating; rinse bottle bins; use lidded cups for children; and empty more often in August, not the same as in May.

Wasp traps have a place outdoors and away from customers, drawing wasps to a point away from the seating. Hung next to a table they do the opposite of what is wanted, which is why the ones you see over the door of a pub are usually working against it.

If there is a nest on site, the traffic will show it: steady two-way movement to one fixed point on the building. Wasps milling around the tables and bins is a housekeeping pattern, not a nest pattern.

How the work is arranged

Commercial attendance is arranged around trading — early, late or on a closed day — so a treatment does not mean losing a service. Same-day is available, and evenings and weekends are not charged as extras.

What you should expect to receive: what was found and where, what was applied, any precautions during and after, and what needs doing to the building or the housekeeping so it does not recur. For a multi-unit site or a parade, it is worth knowing that a nest in a shared roof void is one job rather than one per unit.

The treatment itself is the same as domestic work and carries the same guarantee: if the wasps return to the same nest location, the firm re-treats at no extra cost.
