Wasp Nest Treatment in Leighton Buzzard

Leighton Buzzard and Linslade sit on the Greensand Ridge, and the ground here is sandy. That produces something the clay parts of the patch see far less of: nests in the ground.

Sandy soil holds an old rodent burrow open, drains well and is easy to excavate, which is close to ideal for a queen looking for somewhere underground in April.

Ground nests

A Hole in the Lawn With Traffic

An underground nest looks like almost nothing: a hole the width of a two-pence piece, often in a bank, a lawn edge, under a shed or beside a path, with a steady stream of wasps going in and out. No nest visible, no structure, nothing on the building.

They are worth taking seriously for two reasons. They are usually found by a mower or a strimmer, which means found at the worst possible moment and at very close range. And ground nests can get large, because there is nothing to limit the cavity as the colony excavates.

Treatment is straightforward — dust at the entrance, same as anywhere else — but do not be tempted to pour anything down the hole or block it. Petrol and boiling water are both traditional, both dangerous, and neither reaches a nest that may be half a metre back from the entrance.

Mark the spot and keep away from it until it is dealt with. A ground nest that has been mown over is a different animal for the rest of the day.
