Tring sits at the foot of the Chilterns with old woodland, old parkland and a lot of mature trees close to the housing. That is hornet country in a way the city is not.

Hornets

Bigger, Louder, and Much Less Trouble

The European hornet is genuinely commoner around Tring and the villages than it is in Milton Keynes. It nests in hollow trees, old outbuildings, roof voids and chimneys, and it is about twice the size of a common wasp, with a brown and yellow colour rather than black and yellow.

It is also, despite its reputation, considerably less bad-tempered. European hornets are not aggressive away from the nest and they do not have the scavenging habit that makes common wasps a nuisance round a table in August. Where a hornet nest is somewhere out of the way, leaving it alone is a perfectly reasonable decision.

They do fly at night and they are drawn to lights, which is how most people here first notice one — something very large hitting a lit window after dark.
