Amersham is two places with one name and for this work they behave completely differently. The Old Town in the valley is period, with deep connected roof voids, open eaves and a lot of outbuildings. Amersham on the Hill is largely twentieth century, with tighter, simpler roofs.

Both have mature gardens and Chiltern woodland close by, so the pressure from outside is similar. What differs is entirely what the buildings give them once they arrive.

Voids are large and they connect, so the entrance and the problem can be a long way apart. Proofing has to be sympathetic and sometimes has to wait on a repair.

On the hill, it is usually plastic: a soffit joint, a roof vent, a dry-verge cap, or the junction where a garage or extension roof meets the wall. Quicker to find, generally at normal ladder height, and quicker to close properly.

There is a third, less obvious difference. The valley floor sits closer to groundwater, so drainage there is shallower and flatter, holds water where it has settled, and loses the bedding round an open joint faster. Drain problems concentrate in the valley in a way they do not on the hill.
