Tring sits at the foot of the Chilterns with beech woodland immediately above it, and for this trade that is the defining fact about the place. It also has a high proportion of older property, substantial outbuildings, and villages that are not on a public sewer at all.

Why Some Years Are Much Worse

Beech mast — the nuts — is a primary grey squirrel food, and beech does not crop evenly. It produces a heavy mast every few years, more young survive the winter, and the following season produces a noticeably larger population.

You notice it as a year when everybody locally seems to be talking about squirrels, followed by a quieter one or two. It is not imagination and it is not anything you have done differently.

The woodland brings the European hornet too, which is genuinely commoner around Tring and the villages than it is in Milton Keynes. It nests in hollow trees, old outbuildings and roof voids, it is about twice the size of a common wasp, and it is considerably less bad-tempered — it does not scavenge round a table the way wasps do. Where a hornet nest is out of the way, leaving it alone is a perfectly reasonable decision.

One more local thing: some village property drains to a septic tank rather than a public sewer, which changes the drain rat question completely. There is no sewer population to come up from.
