Amersham is two places for this job. The Old Town in the valley is Victorian and older, with drainage that has been added to for well over a century. Amersham on the Hill is largely twentieth century, with systems that were designed rather than accumulated.

Drainage laid in a valley bottom sits closer to groundwater than drainage on a hill, and two consequences follow.

Runs are shallower and flatter, so they hold water where they have settled, and standing water in a defective run is both an attractant and a reason the defect gets worse.

And groundwater moves in and out of an open joint, which accelerates the washing-out of bedding and the formation of voids alongside the pipe. As on the sandy ground further north, those voids are what turns a crack into a route.

On the hill, expect a more ordinary picture: post-war clay or early plastic, accessible chambers, and a blocker at the last chamber before the boundary.
