Carpet Moth Control in Tring
Older cottages are full of exactly the materials they want, and short of the light they hate.
Carpet Moth Control in Tring
Tring and the villages round it have a lot of genuinely old property - thick walls, small windows, deep window reveals and rooms that are dim even at midday.
That is a pleasant house to be in and an unusually good one to be a moth larva in, because the thing that most limits them indoors is light and disturbance.

Natural Materials and Very Little Light
Three features of older houses here work together.
The materials are the food. Wool rugs, wool runners on stairs, horsehair in the filling of older upholstery, felt under a stair rod, sheepskin in front of a fire. A house furnished to suit the building is a house furnished in keratin.
The light is low. Small windows and deep reveals mean floor level stays dark, and the larvae's main behavioural limit - keeping out of the light - stops limiting them.
There are more undisturbed places. Uneven floors, alcoves, box rooms, cupboards under stairs, a cellar head, a room on the north side that is used at Christmas. Every one of them is a candidate.
None of which is about the moths themselves. It is about where the larvae can feed undisturbed, which in a house like this is most places.
The other thing to say plainly: the moth people find in a Tring cottage in summer is very often not a clothes moth at all. With hedgerow and woodland on the doorstep and windows open, plenty of large moths come indoors. Worth checking the size before assuming the worst - the comparison drawing on the main page settles it in a second.
Short answers
Tring Questions
Our cottage has a lot of old textiles. Is it all at risk?
Only the keratin - wool, silk, fur, feathers, horsehair. Cotton and linen are not food. Old upholstery filling is worth a look because it is often horsehair.
There are always moths in here in summer. Is that carpet moths?
Usually not. A window left open near hedgerow and woodland brings in plenty of large moths that do no harm indoors. Size is the test.
Do you cover the villages around Tring?
Yes, including Wigginton, Aldbury, Long Marston and Marsworth.
