Carpet Moth Control in Leighton Buzzard
The things that come out of a loft in October are the things that were quietly being eaten since March.
Carpet Moth Control in Leighton Buzzard
Leighton Buzzard has a good mix of family housing with generous loft space, and storage is where a great many of these start.
A box of winter woollens, a spare duvet, a rolled-up rug and a bag of outgrown coats is, from the insect side, a larder that nobody opens for eleven months.
Storage
What a Loft or a Garage Actually Is
Stored textiles tick every box at once: wool, darkness, and no disturbance whatsoever. The only thing lofts used to have going for them was the cold, and insulation upgrades have taken a good deal of that away too.
The pattern is usually the same. Something goes up in spring with one or two eggs already on it. It comes down in autumn with the damage done and a few adults that then find the wardrobes. The householder connects the moths to the season rather than to the box.
Three habits make a real difference, and none of them needs us:
- Wash or dry-clean wool before storing it. It is what is on the garment - skin, hair, food, sweat - that attracts them to it in the first place.
- Store in something that actually seals. A zipped fabric bag is not a seal; a lidded plastic box or a vacuum bag is.
- Freeze anything you are suspicious of before it goes in. Small items, a few days in a domestic freezer, sealed in a bag.
What is doing the eating in all of this is the larva, not the moth that eventually flies out of the box — which is why a box that looks fine in March can be ruined by October with nothing visible in between.
If a stored collection already has activity in it, deal with the contents and the space separately. Treating the loft while the infested box goes back up unopened is a wasted visit.
Short answers
Leighton Buzzard Questions
Does freezing actually kill them?
Yes, for small items, if it is cold enough and long enough - a few days in a domestic freezer, sealed in a bag so it does not get damp on the way out.
Can they live in an unheated loft?
They breed more slowly in the cold but they persist, and modern loft insulation keeps the space warmer than it used to be.
Do you cover Linslade and the villages?
Yes, including Linslade, Heath and Reach, Stanbridge and the surrounding area.
