Tring is heavily period and converted: old brick and flint, timber, thick irregular walls, low ceilings and floors that are rarely level. There is also a fair amount of small-scale guest accommodation serving the Chilterns walking trade.

An old cottage is the most demanding kind of room to heat evenly. The walls are thick and irregular, the floors are boarded over voids, and there is usually a fireplace acting as a chimney for the heat you are trying to keep in the room.

Uneven Rooms Heat Unevenly

The physics is unglamorous. Thick irregular walls store a great deal of heat and give it up slowly, a suspended timber floor over a ventilated void loses heat downwards, and an open chimney takes it straight up. All three are present in a lot of Tring cottages at once.

That means longer run times, more equipment for the volume, and more probes — particularly at floor level and around the fireplace, which are the two places a cottage most reliably fails to reach temperature.

It is all manageable. It is just not the same job as a modern bedroom, and anyone quoting it as though it were has not looked.
