That does not mean rats are impossible; it means a blocker on the outgoing pipe is usually answering a question nobody asked. Rats around a private system are normally attracted to it from the surface rather than travelling to it underground, and the answer is a sound tank lid, a sealed inspection cover and ordinary proofing.

It is worth establishing which you are on before anyone quotes for a blocker. If you are not sure, the giveaway is usually a tank or a treatment unit somewhere in the garden or a field, and no connection running out to the road.

On mains-drained property in the town the work is ordinary older drainage: clay, perished joints, roots, and frequently a defunct interceptor trap.
