When they are not using the drain

The Big One

A blocker closes the drainage route. If rats are getting in through a gap behind the bin store, a broken airbrick, a hole where a gas pipe enters, or the roofline, the valve changes nothing at all.

This is the commonest way money gets wasted on this product, and it happens because the drain is the interesting answer. It is much more satisfying to picture rats swimming up a sewer than to accept that there is a gap under the shed.

The test is the diagnosis, not the theory: activity under the floor, droppings near pipe entries, and no findable entry point outside. Without those, look harder outside before buying a valve.

When the defect is beyond your boundary

You Can Fit One, But

If the survey finds the way into the system is in the lateral drain or the sewer — beyond your boundary — a blocker on your side still protects your property, and that is worth having.

But it is not the whole answer, and it may not be the first thing to do. The defect is the water company's to repair, reporting it costs nothing, and a repair solves it for the street rather than for one house. Fitting a valve and saying nothing leaves your neighbours with the problem and leaves a broken sewer broken.

Do both, in that order if you can.

When there is no sewer

Septic Tanks and Treatment Plants

On property draining to a septic tank or a package treatment plant, there is no sewer network to come up from. The system is closed and it terminates in your own ground.

Rats around a private system are almost always attracted from the surface — an unsealed tank lid, a damaged inspection cover, a soakaway they have got into — rather than travelling underground. A non-return valve on the outgoing pipe is answering a question nobody asked.

The answers there are a sound lid, a sealed cover and ordinary proofing.

When it would cause a drainage problem

Placement and Surcharge

There are runs a valve should not go into.

A system that already surcharges — backs up in heavy rain, typically where surface water and foul share a run — is a poor candidate, because a non-return valve in a surcharging system can hold water back on your side rather than letting it equalise. That can move a nuisance into your property.

A run with no accessible chamber is another. A valve you cannot reach cannot be checked, and if it ever sticks you have a blockage in a pipe you cannot get to.

And a shared pipe is not yours to fit anything into. The valve goes in your own branch before it joins, or not at all.

None of these is common, and all of them are the sort of thing a look beforehand establishes. They are the reason "we will come and have a look" is a better answer than a price over the phone.

Three Honest Alternatives

Fix the defect. Where the way in is a cracked length or an open joint on your own run, repairing it closes the route permanently and fixes a drainage fault you had anyway. A blocker on top of that is belt and braces, not a substitute.

Put the stopper back. On older property with an open rodding arm beside a dead interceptor, a few pounds of fitting closes a route that has been open for decades.

Do the proofing. If the diagnosis points above ground, the money belongs in mesh, closures and repairs at the places rats are actually using.
