Worth saying plainly, because we would rather not treat what does not need treating: a garden ant colony in a lawn or a border is doing no harm. They aerate soil, they predate a fair amount of small garden pests, and they are food for a great many things.

The ones that need dealing with are the colony under the terrace that is lifting the slabs, the one at the base of the house wall with a trail going in, and the one that has got under a conservatory base. The rest can stay.

An old building gives ants more ways in than a new one: perished pointing, a worn stone threshold, a gap where a later extension meets rubble-filled wall, and air bricks at low level.

Sealing those is worth doing and it comes second. With the colony still sitting against the wall, closing one gap in old masonry simply sends them to the next one, and in a building like this there is always a next one.
