Block paving

Drives, Patios and the Sand Underneath

A block-paved drive is laid on a bed of sand. Ants excavate that sand, push it up through the joints and carry on, and over a few seasons the bedding thins where they have been working. Blocks start to rock, the joints open further, and sunken patches appear that people put down to the way the drive was laid.

The soil piles between the blocks are the sign, and they are easy to dismiss as ordinary dirt. If they reappear within a day or two of being brushed off, that is an active colony directly underneath.

Treating the colony first and re-sanding afterwards is the right order. Re-sanding over a live nest just gives them fresh material.

Grid Square Housing and the Path of Least Resistance

Estate housing built to a pattern fails in the same places repeatedly. On a lot of MK housing the ant route in is the joint where a conservatory or extension base meets the original wall, the gap under a patio door track, or the hole where a waste pipe passes through and was never sealed round.

We check those first because we know where they are. If a neighbour on the same street has the same problem, mention it, because identical houses give ants identical opportunities.
