Concrete Paths, Shed Bases and Cracked Slabs

A fifty-year-old concrete path with a crack down it, or an old slabbed patio with the pointing gone, is better for ants than a new one. The cracks give access, the slab holds warmth, and the soil underneath is dry and undisturbed.

So on this kind of property the nest is often not in the lawn or the border but directly under something hard. Lift a loose slab on a warm day and you will usually know at once: brood gets moved within seconds of the light hitting it.

Where the Trail Gets In

In a terrace the route indoors is short. A back door onto a concrete step, an old threshold that has worn down, the gap where a kitchen extension meets the original brickwork, or a drain gully right beside the door.

Follow the line out and it usually ends within a couple of metres of the building. That is good news: a nest that close is straightforward to find and to treat.
