Preparing Your Home for a Flea Treatment
Good preparation is mostly vacuuming and moving furniture. The mistake that costs people a second visit comes afterwards.
Before the visit
- Vacuum everywhere, thoroughly, especially carpet edges, under and behind furniture, and wherever the animal lies. Empty the cylinder or bag straight into an outside bin afterwards.
- Hot-wash pet bedding and anything the animal sleeps on, at the highest temperature the fabric takes, and tumble dry it.
- Pull furniture away from the walls where you can, so the carpet edge is reachable.
- Pick up toys, clothes and anything loose from the floor in the rooms being treated.
- Lift rugs where you can, or at least be ready to, because what is under them needs treating too.
- Make a list of every room, vehicle and outbuilding the animal uses. Including the car. Especially the car.
If your vet has treated the animal, say when. If they have not yet, ring them — the two want to happen close together.

On the day
People and pets need to be out of the treated areas while the treatment goes down and for a few hours afterwards while it settles. We will give you the time on the day; it depends on what has been treated and on how well the rooms ventilate.
Cover fish tanks and turn the pumps off before we arrive. Cages and small animals come out of the treated rooms. Food preparation surfaces are covered or cleared. If there is anyone in the house with a respiratory condition, or someone pregnant, tell us when you book rather than on the doorstep — it changes how we plan the visit.
The mistake that undoes it
Do not shampoo, steam-clean or wet-clean the carpets after the treatment.
It is the single most common way a flea job gets undone, and it is completely understandable — the house has had fleas in it and people want it clean. But a residual treatment sits in the carpet doing its work for weeks, and washing it lifts it straight back out, usually just as the cocoons start emerging.
We will tell you how long to leave it. Vacuuming is different and is positively encouraged.
Afterwards
Keep vacuuming, daily if you can, concentrating on the edges, under furniture and the animal's spots. It lifts eggs and larvae out and the vibration brings adults out of their cocoons into the treatment.
Keep the pet's own treatment going on whatever schedule your vet set. Keep washing the pet bedding. And expect to see fleas for a while — what matters is that there are fewer each week.
If a follow-up is part of the plan it is arranged before we leave, not left for you to chase.

Do I need to leave the house for the whole day?
No. You need to stay out of the treated areas for a few hours while the treatment settles. We give you the time on the day, and it depends on what was treated and how the rooms ventilate.
What about the fish tank?
Cover it and turn the pump off before we arrive, and leave it that way until we say otherwise. Tell us it is there when you book so we plan around it.
