Why the ankles

Cat and dog fleas cannot breed on a human and do not stay on one. What they do is jump from the floor, bite, and leave.

Since they are launching from carpet level, they reach the ankles, the lower legs and sometimes as far as the knee. That is the giveaway. Clusters of small red marks on the lower legs of somebody who has been walking about a carpeted room is a flea pattern, and it is different from almost anything else.

They typically come in twos and threes close together, are intensely itchy, and often have a small darker point at the centre where the bite went in. Sitting on a carpeted floor, or a toddler crawling on one, moves the pattern up the body accordingly.

Telling them apart

Bed bug bites are usually on skin that was uncovered in bed — arms, shoulders, neck, upper back — and are noticed on waking, because bed bugs live in the bed and feed at night. Fleas bite when you walk through the room.

Mosquito bites are more often single and scattered rather than in tight clusters, and tend to be seasonal.

None of these is reliable enough to act on by itself. Bite patterns point; they do not prove. The thing that settles a flea case is the flea dirt test on white paper, and it takes two minutes.

The health side, plainly

For most people flea bites are an irritation rather than a danger: itchy, sometimes for several days, and they clear on their own. Some people react much more strongly than others, and children often react more than adults in the same house, which is why one person can be covered while another notices nothing.

Scratching them open can let an infection in, which is the commonest real complication. If a bite looks infected, spreads, or you feel unwell with it, that is one for a pharmacist or your GP.

Fleas matter more for pets than for people. Flea allergy dermatitis is a genuine and miserable condition in cats and dogs, and fleas can pass tapeworm to an animal that swallows one while grooming. Both of those are conversations for your vet, and both are good reasons not to leave a flea problem to settle itself.

What to do about the bites

Treating the bites does not treat the cause, and the cause is in the carpet. Do the flea dirt test, ring your vet about the animal, and get the property treated.

In the meantime, a pharmacist can advise on something for the itching. Keep the area clean and try not to scratch them open — that is the part that turns an irritation into a problem.
