They Move Things About

Cockroaches do not transmit disease the way a mosquito does. What they do is mechanical transfer: they walk through drains, waste, bin stores and decaying material, then walk across food, preparation surfaces and crockery, carrying whatever was on their feet and body with them.

Organisms that have been recovered from cockroaches in various studies include salmonella, E. coli, staphylococcus and listeria, among others. They also contaminate through droppings and through regurgitation while feeding.

The practical risk is food poisoning rather than anything exotic, and it is concentrated exactly where you would expect — food preparation and storage. Which is why cockroaches in a domestic kitchen are a nuisance and cockroaches in a commercial kitchen are a regulatory matter.

The one that matters most

Asthma and Allergy

This is the genuine health finding and it is the one nobody expects.

Cockroach allergens — proteins in their droppings, shed skins and body fragments — become part of household dust. Exposure is an established trigger for asthma and allergic sensitisation, and the association is strongest in children living in infested housing.

It is a bigger and better-evidenced health effect than the food poisoning risk, and it is completely invisible: it does not require anybody to see a cockroach, only to live with the residue of a population in the building.

It is also why the clean-up afterwards matters and is not just cosmetic. Removing accumulated droppings and debris from harbourages removes the allergen source, and that is part of finishing the job properly.

What is overstated

Two Things Worth Being Straight About

It is easy to sell pest control with alarm, and it is worth being accurate instead.

Cockroaches do not bite people in any meaningful sense. It is possible in extreme infestations and it essentially never happens in the situations we are called to. If something is biting you, look for a different cause.

They do not cause disease outbreaks on their own. The organisms they carry have to reach food and then be given the conditions to multiply. Cockroaches are one link in a chain, not the whole chain, which is why the food-handling controls matter as much as the treatment.

The honest summary: a real and manageable contamination risk, a real and under-appreciated allergen risk, and not much beyond that.

Reducing it

While the Treatment Works

Treatment takes days and sometimes a follow-up, so the interim matters.

Store food in sealed rigid containers rather than packaging. Wash anything that has been out before using it — crockery, utensils, chopping boards. Wipe preparation surfaces before use as well as after. Keep the bin lidded and empty it more often than usual. Deal with water: a dripping tap sustains a population on its own.

And vacuum rather than sweep where you can, particularly where droppings have accumulated. It removes the allergen rather than putting it into the air, and a machine with a good filter makes a real difference in a household with asthma in it.
