Buckingham has a university, and the part of student accommodation that matters for cockroaches is the shared kitchen: heavily used, often by people cooking at different times, with a lot of appliances and a lot of cardboard.

The town centre adds independent catering in older buildings, much of it with accommodation above. Both settings share the same feature — several households, one building.

A shared kitchen concentrates everything a German cockroach needs into one room and then makes it nobody's sole responsibility. Multiple fridges and microwaves, each a warm harbourage; food stored in cardboard; washing up left at different times by different people; and no single person who notices that the same corner keeps having a problem.

Treatment in that setting needs access to every appliance, which in practice means agreeing a time when the kitchen can be cleared and somebody can let us behind the units.

It also means treating the whole flat or house rather than one room, because from a shared kitchen they will have moved along the service runs into the bedrooms either side.
