Why accommodation is exposed, and why that is not a failing
Any business where a stream of people arrive with luggage from somewhere else is exposed to bed bugs, and there is no standard of housekeeping that changes that. Bed bugs arrive in bags. A spotless room is as easy to seed as any other.
What separates a well-run property from a badly-run one is not whether it ever gets them. It is how quickly it finds them and what it does next.

The three-minute changeover check
This is the single cheapest control measure available to any accommodation business, and it belongs in the housekeeping routine rather than in a policy document.
- Torch along both sides of every mattress seam and the label tag.
- Torch the folded fabric edge and corners of the divan base.
- Check the headboard joints, screw holes and the back of it where it meets the wall.
- Check the seams of any upholstered chair in the room, and underneath it.
Look for black spotting, not for insects. Insects will usually not be visible during the day; spotting is there whether they are or not. We are happy to show housekeeping staff what it looks like.
When a guest reports bites
Take it seriously and inspect, but do not assume. A proportion of bite reports turn out to be something else entirely, and a room taken out of service unnecessarily is a real cost.
Inspect the reported room properly, and inspect the rooms either side and directly above and below. By the time one room produces a complaint it is often not the only one, and the adjoining rooms are the cheapest place to look next.
Do not move the guest's luggage to another room. That is how one room becomes two.
Treatment, turnaround and discretion
Heat is frequently the right method for accommodation, for one practical reason: the room is treated, it cools, and it is back in service with no residue, no smell and nothing to wash down. That is usually the same day.
