What Bed Bug Bites Do and Do Not Tell You
Bites are what send people searching, and they are the one sign that proves almost nothing on their own.
Why bites are unreliable evidence
People react to bed bug bites very differently. Some come up in obvious raised red welts within hours. Some take days to react. A substantial number of people show no visible reaction at all, which is how a couple ends up with one person covered and the other convinced nothing is happening.
Reactions can also change. Somebody who showed nothing for weeks can start reacting strongly as sensitivity builds, which makes it look like a sudden new infestation when the population has actually been there for months.
So bites are a prompt to go and look. They are not a diagnosis, and no photograph of a bite can confirm what caused it.

Photographs on this page are for illustration purposes only.
What bed bug bites tend to look like
With those caveats, there are patterns worth knowing.
- Where. Skin that was uncovered in bed — arms, shoulders, neck, upper back, face, ankles.
- Arrangement. Sometimes in a rough line or a loose cluster, though the pattern is not reliable and the old “breakfast, lunch and dinner” line is folklore rather than evidence.
- Timing. Noticed on waking, and worse over consecutive mornings.
- Appearance. Raised, red, itchy, sometimes with a darker centre.
Flea bites, by contrast, cluster around the ankles and lower legs, because fleas jump from the floor. Mosquito bites are usually single and scattered rather than lined up, and are more common in summer and near standing water.
The health side, briefly and honestly
Bed bugs are not known to transmit disease to people. That is worth saying plainly because it is the thing people are most frightened of, and it is not the risk.
The real effects are broken sleep, persistent itching, and for some people a lot of anxiety about their own home, which is not a trivial thing and is one of the reasons we treat these jobs as urgent.
Bites that are scratched open can become infected, and a small number of people react more severely. If a bite looks infected, spreads, or you feel unwell with it, that is one for a pharmacist or your GP rather than for a pest controller.
What to do instead of studying the bites
Go and check the mattress seams, the divan base edge and the headboard joints with a torch, looking for black spotting rather than for insects. That check takes ten minutes and gives a real answer.
If you find spotting, ring us on 01908 465226. If you find nothing at all and the bites continue, tell us that too — it points somewhere else, and that is useful information rather than a dead end.

Quick Answers
My partner has bites and I have none. Does that rule it out?
No — it is one of the most common presentations we hear. Reactions vary enormously between people and a proportion of people never mark at all. Check the seams rather than comparing skin.
Can a doctor confirm bed bugs from the bites?
Not definitively. Bite reactions are not specific enough to identify the insect that caused them. Confirmation comes from finding spotting, skins, eggs or live bugs in the room.
