The boundary

Where a garden meets woodland or rough ground, the run comes in along the boundary and then along whatever cover exists — a hedge, a fence line, a border planted hard against a wall.

Which is useful, because runs are readable. Flattened paths through grass, smears on a fence post, droppings along a boundary, and holes at the base of a bank all say where they are coming from and where they are heading.

Deal with it at the boundary and it rarely reaches the house.
