How Long Does Rat Treatment Take?
The honest answer is more than one visit, and there is a specific biological reason for it that is worth understanding.
Neophobia, and why it sets the clock
Rats are strongly neophobic — wary of new objects in an environment they know well. A bait station placed on a run they use every night may be avoided for several days purely because it was not there before.
They will approach it, circle it, and eventually accept it as part of the furniture. Until they do, nothing is being consumed and nothing is happening, and it looks exactly like a treatment that is not working.
Mice do not really do this, which is why mouse jobs move faster and why comparing the two leads people to think something has gone wrong.
What happens on each visit
Visit one is inspection and setting up. Establishing where they are, following the runs, checking likely entry points and the drainage where there is reason to, then placing and securing whatever is appropriate.
Return visits check take-up, replenish, move things that are not being used, and look for carcasses. This is also when the picture of where they are getting in usually firms up, because by then there is more evidence to read.
The proofing is done once the picture is clear, and it is the part that decides whether the job is finished or paused.
A realistic timescale
For a straightforward domestic job, expect the work to run over a few weeks rather than a few days, with visits spaced to let something actually happen in between.
Activity often looks unchanged for the first week. That is expected. What would concern us is no change by the second and third visits, which tells us something about the placement or the source is wrong — and that is information, not failure.
Larger or commercial sites take longer, because there is more perimeter, more possible routes and usually a food source that cannot simply be removed.

Can you not just do it in one visit?
We can attend the same day, and often should. But rats avoid new objects for several days, so a single visit cannot do more than set things up. Anyone promising a one-visit rat fix is selling a visit rather than a result.
Nothing has changed after a week. Is it working?
Probably, and that is the normal pattern. The first week is often spent with the rats deciding the bait station is not a threat. No change by the second and third visits is a different matter and tells us to change the approach.
